Biography

Prof. S. P. Purohit did M.Sc. Physics in 1986 from H.N.B. Garhwal University, Srinagar, Uttarakhand. In 1986 he joined research in the area of Atomic and Molecular Collision Physics at University of Roorkee (presently IIT Roorkee) and obtained Ph.D. degree in the year 1992. Subsequently, he continued as research associate CSIR at Physics Department, University of Roorkee and then joined the Theoretical Physics group at Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad in 1994 as a post doctoral fellow for a period of about one year. Prof. Purohit worked as lecturer in Physics at Bareilly College, Bareilly, U. P. and at Kumaon Engineering College, Dwarahat, Uttarakhand Govt. He taught for ten years at Kumaon Engineering College. He joined JIIT as Assistant Professor in 2005 and promoted to the level of associate Professor and Professor at JIIT in 2008 and 2013 respectively. He has total 29 years of teaching experience since Oct. 1994 and research experience of about 37 years since Oct. 1986. He is also working as Controller of Examinations at JIIT, Noida since Jan. 2016.

The research work performed by Prof. Purohit deals with the electron and positron–atom collisions, the laser–assisted electron–atom scattering, linear and nonlinear optical properties of quantum dots and nanoscience. Presently, he has fifty eight publications including research papers in International Journals of the American Physical Society, American Optical Society, American Scientific Publishers, the European Physical Society, Springer–Verlag, Elsevier, IEEE, NASA, AIP, International, and National Conferences. He is a life member of Indian Physics Association.

Research Highlights

The research work performed by Prof. Purohit includes applications of quantum methods to investigate atomic collisions, laser-assisted atomic collisions, and non-linear optical properties of quantum dot structures.

In atomic collisions his key contributions deals with the quantum mechanical formalism by using perturbation methods to investigate the differential and total cross sections and the polarisation and correlation parameters in the electron and positron scattering with the lithium and sodium atoms. Using the quantum methods Prof. Purohit also investigated the laser-assisted electron scattering with hydrogen atoms. In the nanoscience and quantum dot structures his main contributions includes the investigation of linear and nonlinear optical properties such as absorption coefficients, second-harmonic generation, third-harmonic generation, sum frequency and difference frequency generation, refractive index change and optical rectification and photoelectric and multiphoton processes in Si, ZnO and GaAs quantum dots.
