Thrust Areas of the Department
Both experimental and theoretical research works are going on in the Department. The experimental research is carried out on the synthesis, characterization and applications of advanced materials (nanomaterials, ferroelectric, ferromagnetic, organic, diluted semiconducting, organized assemblies, conducting polymers, bio-molecules). In addition, experimental work is also done in the emerging area of quantum communication. The experimental research is supplemented by a strong theoretical group which works in different areas such as quantum optics, quantum information theory, spectroscopy, plasma physics, atomic, molecular and laser physics, nanostructures, thermoelectric and superconducting materials. The departmental research is broadly segregated into three research groups as below:
  • Advanced Materials
  • Photonics and Plasmonics
  • Quantum Optics and Quantum Information Group
Advanced Materials

There has been always a rigour to invent newer and newer materials. Materials invention and its applications has always been the subject of attraction for the human society. This is the advanced materials era where the materials with multifunctionalities are developed. Advanced Materials are known to play a significant role in the high-tech Industry like Air-craft industry, Automobile industry, Artificial Intelligence, DRDO, ISRO etc.

Group members in the field of Advanced Materials are working hard to meet challenges in synthesizing and characterizing newer and newer materials and methods which are useful for battery, data storage, sensor, photocatalytic applications, MEMS and smart systems in the bulk and thin film or nano-structural form.

This thrust area includes research on:

  • Advanced Functional Materials
  • Multifunctional Nanomaterials & Nanotechnology
  • Energy Materials
  • Low Temperature Physics and Superconductivity
  • Solid State Ionics (Materials and Devices)
  • Spintronics
