Department Overview

Mathematics has an important role to play in diverse domains of science, engineering and technology. Keeping this in view, the Department of Mathematics at JIIT has a vision to become a centre of excellence in teaching and research in basic and applied areas of Mathematics. The Department offers academic programmes and courses in contemporary and emerging areas of Mathematics and its applications for the development of analytical and problem-solving skills. This is done by offering a large number of core, elective and value-added courses for B. Tech., M. Tech., B.B.A., B.C. A. and the doctorate programmes. In addition, the Department also runs its own B. Tech. (Mathematics and Computing), B. Sc. (Computer Science), M. Sc. (Mathematics) and Ph. D. programmes.

From the inception, the Department has a great passion for research and development. The entire teaching faculty is actively engaged in research in their respective fields and a significant number of research papers are being published every year in the various journals of repute in addition to the contribution in the research projects funded by government agencies.

The field of mathematics however is constantly evolving to the ever-changing need and challenges of its practitioners. Therefore, the faculty members of the department also need to update continuously through various activities such as workshops, faculty development programs, guest lectures, conferences etc.

Department Overview Key Points:
  • Comprehensive Programs: It offers its own undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG), and PhD programs, providing a full spectrum of educational opportunities.

Thrust Areas of the Department
The faculty members of the Department are involved in the following three research groups:
  • Fractals & Chaos and Mathematical Analysis
  • Numerical Analysis and Computational Continuum Mechanics
  • Statistics, Fuzzy, Information Theory and Operations Research
Fractals & Chaos and Mathematical Analysis

It is one of the three active research groups of the department. Indeed, fractals and chaos are new frontiers of science and important emerging interdisciplinary areas of research nowadays. Almost all branches of sciences and engineering are benefiting from the new insights provided by them. Many shapes found in nature which are highly rough and complex at different scales, fractal interpolation methods are popularly accepted approximation tools in such cases. Mathematical analysis provides the foundation for further development in these areas. The applications of explorations in these areas encompasses various disciplines of sciences, engineering, medicine, business, weather forecasting and several other areas of human activities.

The following faculty members of the department are involved in this group:

  • Prof. Alka Tripathi
  • Prof. B P Chamola
  • Dr. Manish Kumar Bansal
  • Dr. Shikha Pandey
  • Dr. Gaurav Agarwal
  • Dr. Shashank Goel
  • Dr. Priya Shahi
Research & Publication

The strength of any department is measured by the research output of the faculty/students, and in what journals they publish in, and are cited in, or Journal Citation Reports, which measures value and impact of high-quality refereed journals.
