Department Overview

The Department of Biotechnology at JIIT, Noida, established in 2002, is a pioneering academic and research hub, seamlessly integrating engineering with life sciences. We are committed to nurturing the next generation of scientists, innovators, and entrepreneurs poised to shape the future of biotechnology, globally. With a strong foundation in interdisciplinary education and focus on practical application, we foster a vibrant academic ecosystem driven by innovation, collaboration, and excellence. 

In alignment with India’s strategic foresight including the BioE3 vision, National Biotechnology Development Strategy, STIP 2020, and National Bioeconomy Mission, we actively contribute to precision therapeutics, bio-based industrial innovation, and climate-resilient systems. Simultaneously, our ethos is rooted in advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, with a focus on good health, sustainable agriculture, and climate action. We aim, to be a national Centre of Excellence, fostering responsible innovation and research, producing visionary and impactful professionals, researchers, entrepreneurs, committed to Viksit Bharat 2047. 

The Biotechnology curriculum is designed to ensure that the graduates of this program combine the following important abilities and skills:
  • Proficiency in the domain of Basic Science, Engineering, and Biotechnology.
  • Apply practical skills and bioinformatics tools in laboratories and projects to address complex biotechnological problems.
  • Design, analyze, and optimize systems and processes involving biological entities using engineering and scientific approaches.
  • Demonstrate awareness of ethical, social, environmental, and biosafety considerations guided by institutional bioethics and biosafety committees.
  • Develop effective communication, teamwork, and professionalism through collaborative projects and industry-academia interactions.
  • Translate research into real-world applications and understand the basics of intellectual property management and biotech product commercialization.
  • Acquire strong foundation in IT and allied fields to explore interdisciplinary areas such as bioinformatics, biophysics, biostatistics, drug design, and clinical research.

The departmental research is broadly segregated into three Centres as below:

Center of Excellence in Emerging Diseases

Centre of Excellence in Emerging Diseases” addresses the questions of molecular mechanism/pathogenesis/host pathogen interactions of emerging and re-emerging viral and bacterial pathogens (Mycobacterium and others) and life style diseases such as obesity & diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular and CNS disorders using both wet laboratory and tools of computational biology/bioinformatics (genomics, proteomics and evolutionary approaches). Research emphasis is also on peptide-based therapeutics, regulatory peptides, biosensor and ELISA based diagnostics, and drug encapsulated nanoparticles and nanoemulsions.
