My research lies at the intersection of bioresources and natural products, with a focus on harnessing the therapeutic and industrial potential of microbial and plant biodiversity. In our culture-dependent investigations, we isolate and characterize microorganisms from niche habitats—including deserts, forests, lichens, limestone rocks, heritage monuments, inland water bodies and endophytic associations—aiming to identify bioactive compounds with significant applications. Complementing this, the metagenomics research seeks to understand the uncultivable novel biodiversity, thus expanding the scope of discovery beyond cultivable species. Whole Genome Sequencing studies on selected microorganisms have revealed interesting insights on the unharnessed potential in bioactivity. Metaviromic studies focus on understanding the virus portfolio in the environment and possibilities of utilizing them in targeting antibiotic resistance. Our group has developed strong capabilities in leveraging taxonomic identity and dovetailing novel species with hitherto undiscovered natural bioactive metabolites.
The work extends to fermented food products, where bioactivity is scientifically evaluated and the contributing microbial diversity is mapped to understand and validate their functional properties. This work proposes utilizing traditional knowledge base to develop functional food tailored to address modern lifestyles. Further, utilizing microorganisms to develop soil conditioners to address peri-urban soil degradation is in progress.
My group’s work contributes to advancing sustainable resource utilization while deepening our understanding of microbial and plant biodiversity as reservoirs of innovation for health, industry, and the environment. bridges fundamental biodiversity studies with real-world applications in waste management, industrial biotechnology, and health-related innovations.
As Associate Dean (Programme Coordinator for online courses (NPTEL), Ranking, Interfacing for Perception & Collaboration Enhancement), my mandate is to contribute to dissemination of information on MOOC courses, coordination with students and SWAYAM and disseminate guidelines.
